MIAMI Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is skipping workouts with the team while he negotiates a new deal.
It has been reported that Tagovailoa has been absent for most of the Dolphins’ voluntary workouts as they continue preparations for the 2024 season.
Tagovailoa is set to play the 2024 season on an expiring contract.
The former Alabama star would likely want to receive an extension before Week 1 of the season arrives in September.
Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports Tagovailoa has been absent for most of the voluntary workouts.
But he did turn up for work on Monday, according to Dianna Russini from the Athletic.
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier talked in January about keeping Tagovailoa in Miami long term.
“We never talk about money or anything, just good conversations about where he is and the relationship with (head coach) Mike (McDaniel) and the team here and everything he’s done,” Grier said.
“So the goal is to have him here long-term playing at a high level. That’s always the goal and we’ll continue to communicate with him through the offseason here.”
Tagovailoa has been with the Dolphins since being selected fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
He finished the 2023 season with 4,624 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The Dolphins ended the regular season 11-6, for second place in the AFC East and a place in the playoffs.
But they were no match for the Kansas City Chiefs on Wild Card Weekend.
The Chiefs ran out 26-7 winners at Arrowhead in January.
Tight end Jonnu Smith, who joined Miami from the Atlanta Falcons in March, is one who admits he can’t wait to play with Tagovailoa.
“Just looking at Tua on paper, he’s got it,” Smith said.
