BROADCASTER Al Michaels has revealed the wild story of how Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and his wife met live on air in the first-ever Black Friday game.
In the fourth quarter of the Dolphins eventual 34-13 blowout win over the New York Jets on Black Friday, the 79-year-old commentator told a previously unknown tale about the married head skipper.
McDaniel, 40, has been married to Katie Hemstalk since 2014.
The couple tied the knot after seeing each other for five years.
Present day, the two are parents to a daughter, Alya June.
On air, Michaels decided to disclose a little-known story of how McDaniel and Hemstalk got together, detailing how he stole her from one of his players.
“Tell me a Sacramento Mountain Lions story,” Michaels began, reenacting the question he asked the head coach about one of his prior jobs during the week.
“The United Football League, 2010. He’s the running backs coach.
“They blow out Omaha, they go to a nightclub to celebrate.
“One of the running backs that he coaches is dancing with a girl, and Mike says, ‘Listen, you’re not dancing with her anymore or you’re not playing with this team next year.'”
Color commentator Kirk Herbstreit looked on at the veteran play-by-play man, stunned by the story.
“So the guy says, ‘What can I do?'” Michaels continued.
“So, then McDaniel starts dancing with her. That’s the beginning of the story.
“Four years later, they’re married. Katie, that’s how he met her.
“Hey, you, get off, I’m dancing with her. Right?”
Michaels even said Stephen Ross, the Dolphins owner, had never heard of the story.
Fans on social media raved McDaniel was the “coolest coach ever” and “Mr. Steal Your Girl.”
Katie and McDaniel remain happily married.
In Week 12, the Dolphins head coach led the franchise to another win, catapulting them to 8-3, tied for first in the AFC standings.
He’ll look to keep the two-game winning streak going in Week 13 with a matchup against the Washington Commanders.
